Common Core Writing Rubrics

Aloha fabulous friends!  I am finally sitting down to share some new items from a workshop that I recently attended.

Has your district/state adopted the Common Core standards?  I know some states do not follow them, but we began our journey about 3 years ago.  We didn't have much training and we were kind of thrown into it!  I have a feeling many of you are in the same boat.

As in many new educational undertakings we are given a task and we do our best to go with it.  We don't have the materials or resources, just a mandate to "get it done".  It can be so frustrating!

One of the biggest challenges at my school was the writing component of Common Core.  There are not that many standards, but sometimes we interpret them so differently.  Within our grade level we had different ideas.  Our district has not adopted a writing curriculum and we have no updated materials or Common Core rubrics.

Well this past week I attended a district wide training on creating writing rubrics aligned to Common Core.  It was a two day workshop where I collaborated with other 2nd grade teachers district wide. Again we were not given the rubric we were asked to create rubrics that aligned from K-6.

We were however given some resources.  We looked at several online resources, but the following had great rubrics for their school districts.

Using these sites as a guideline we sat down and got to work on our own.  This is what we came up with.

We broke it down into 5 categories-Introduction, Development/Evidence, Conclusion, Organization and Language Skills.

There is a rubric for each strand of writing and the Language Skills rubric goes with all of them.  I just didn't want to add it 3 different times.

What we were using before was so general that I feel like these make it much more clear and easy to break down each part of the writing.

These are definitely not "Kid Friendly" but it is a place to start to really see how my kids are doing in their writing and what I need to work on teaching.

Just looking at this gave me so many "Mini Lesson" ideas for my Writer's Workshop.

If you would like a copy of these just click on any of the pictures and it will take you to Google Docs.

I also have a Word Document that can be edited if you would like to change any items. Just click {HERE}.

I would love to hear your thoughts on these.  What does your district/school use?  Are they similar or completely different?  Please share your ideas and favorite resources. You can never have too many resources, right?

  1. I would love to take a look at what you've created, but when I click on the link I just get a blank screen. Anything I can do differently?

  4. I was looking at your writing rubrics, and thought they looked great - and they looked like something I could use. Then I got to your question at the end of your post - and realized our district hasn't given us any rubrics for writing. Thanks for sharing yours! Sara

  7. These are wonderful! Thank you so much! Could you just share what the initials above each level stand for? I think I can figure out most of them but I wanted to make sure I knew what they meant. Thanks!

  9. Thanks for sharing! This is very timely for me. On a separate topic, I have a blog that I use as my classroom webpage. I would like to turn pictures into links as you have done above, but I haven't been able to figure it out. Can you give me some details about how to do that? Thank you!

  10. Thank you so much for sharing your ideas! I am taking a Common Core writing class and searching for great rubrics. Yours is fantastic! Whom should I cite for these? I was not sure if it is just you or a group that put these together. Thank you again for sharing with all of us!

Thanks so much for these rubrics. They are very helpful. Will you please explain what ME, MP, DP, and WB mean? I want to make sure that what I'm thinking they stand for is correct. Thanks again, Amy
