I had a little mishap when I opened my classroom door on Thursday. Apparently over the break we had some upgrades to the electrical system. The work crews came into our classrooms and moved everything out of the way to access the outlets. Well they decided not to put anything back!!
My classroom was a mess and looked like my first day back in the summer! I was so upset and in tears as I had 15 minutes before the kids came into the class!!
I called the office and they sent down the janitor to help me move my desk back into place. I was totally stressed out and to top it all off, I had a new student waiting at the door with her mother!
I finally just let the kids in and told them to read on the carpet while I cleaned up the mess. I ended up just shoving everything in the corner until the end of the day!! My kids were so good and just happy to see each other and talk about their vacation.
After the morning fiasco, things calmed down and we shared what we did over our vacations.
I brought the kids a little treat from Arizona and they were really excited about it!
We just finished learning about the desert and I told them I would bring something back for them.
I also brought this.
It has a little noise maker inside and it was so cute as I read it and showed it to the kids. They were wide eyed and totally fell for it. I had one of my cuties come up and open it. He jumped when it made the rattling sound and all the other kids rushed forward to make sure he was okay! They all got a good laugh when I explained what it was.
Since it is January and it is cold here I decided to do a fun little Wintery activity with my students. Since they love jokes so much and really enjoyed my Halloween Riddle activity I created one for Winter.
There is a center activity with lots of fun Snowman jokes, a book and a snowman craft.
We made our Snowmen on Friday and they turned out so cute!
I made a really cute bulletin board with all of their creations.
The kids loved them and they all wanted to take it home. The boys went crazy for the mustaches, but some of the girls didn't want a mustache. So I told them they could make a pink mustache.
I wished that I had some google eyes to make them even more silly, but I was all out.
These were really easy to make and I'm sure you could create your own pattern as well.
You can pick up this pack in my TpT store if you are interested. But I will give away 3 to my fabulous followers. Just leave me a comment with your email and I will pick 3 random numbers on Sunday evening.
If you started back this week I hope it was a good one. If you don't go back until Monday enjoy your last few days.
I go back on Monday! It has been a good break, though. Your snowmen are so cute!

What an welcome back. Glad the janitor came to help you. Those snowmen are adorable. Love it.

The snowmen are adorable! I came into my classroom on Wed. to find ceiling tiles down, insulation all over, and it was 40 degrees... The heater couldn't work when it was going straight out the ceiling. I don't know what they were doing though.

I am so sorry! I can't even imagine what I would have done if my classroom looked like that unexpectedly after coming back after the break. I feel your pain just a little bit though. I had to have my classroom completely packed up and everything off of the floor before I left for our break. They are replacing the floors in our K/1 hallway. They were waxing the floors yesterday and we can't get in our building over the weekends. I have PD on Monday, so I will be putting my entire classroom back together after our PD. The students come back on Tuesday. I still say that your situation was way worse. I'll be thankful that at least I know what I am walking into and I'll have time to get it ready Monday evening before the kids come back. It looks like you made the best of your day and did a lot of fabulous activities with your kids. Hang in there!
ReplyDeleteThat had to be super stressful! Sorry that happened to you but glad your kids were flexible! :) your packet looks super cute!

We went back Wednesday and the kids on Thursday so I had time to prepare for the return, thank goodness cause our rooms had been moved around a bit. My kids would love these, they love jokes as well and had to tell a few in their Christmas program, if I don't win I will def. have to grab this activity.

Corinna, those silly snowmen are so sweet. I'm keeping my fingers crossed;)
ReplyDeleteI can't believe they would leave your room like that ... well, actually I guess I can because that's what would happen here. Drives me CRAZY! Sorry for your rough start.
Just out of curiosity, whats the temperature when it's cold in Hawaii?
Have a fun weekend...hopefully you get some surfing in!

Love your snowmen! I know my kids love reading jokes too! Great way to combine them. I try to find jokes and match with a cutsie clipart and put them on the kids lockers so that while they are in the halls they can read them too. Of course sometimes, that means we have kids who take forever to come back from the bathroom! But if they are reading that's a good reason. . . and if they get the jokes, then they are using higher thinking skills!
ReplyDeleteLove that you do things with snow when you don't usually get snow in Hawaii!

P.S. I hate it when repair men leave a mess. . they would HATE it if we came into their workplace and left a mess of their tools, wires, etc! Geesh!

I love your silly snowmen. Good thought about the googly eyes. That would be a cool addition.
ReplyDeleteJust before the break we read "Big Bushy Mustache" in our StoryTown anthologies. I could definitely use this as a springboard to a review discussion. Thanks so much!

ReplyDeleteI go back on Monday, the kids come on Tuesday. I can relate to your room. I teach in a school that is 80 years old. They are finally putting in central air/heat...my room is a mess! I'm so mad and we couldn't get in to work because of this..sigh. Oh well, it'll all work out! :O)

These are adorable. I go back Monday and this would be a fun activity to do this week as we go back and we are going back to rainy weather/possible snow which we are not used to on a regular basis.

That happened to me one year. They decided to wax our floors without telling us. Ever since then I always make sure to get to school 30-60 minutes early. It's not the best way to start off the new year, but neither is a messy room. I'm hoping everything is good. Very cute snowmen by the way. I love the pink mustaches.

In the summertime, I have nightmares about school beginning and I walk in and my classroom is all messed up and the kids and their parents are at the door. I'm so sorry my nightmares became your reality. What a testament to your amazing classroom management that they just sat and chatted and waited for you! What fun you brought from Arizona! Your students are very lucky to have you!
