Today I wanted to send a big Mahalo to all of you who have purchased my Aloha unit! It is something I had planned to make for quite awhile and am so happy that I did. I am in no way an expert on Hawaii, but having lived here for 10 years I have learned a lot!
I received a nice picture from a fellow teacher in Arizona who had a multicultural fair recently. She had purchased my unit and added some of her own flair to it. She is originally from Hawaii :) I am so honored when I receive such sweet feedback!
I love the foods that they tried-Kalua pork, haupia (coconut pudding), pineapple and macadamia nuts.
Today I am posting my first tutorial! It is a little language lesson for those of you who may not be as familiar with the Hawaiian language. I included the pronunciations in my unit, but sometimes it is helpful to hear it.
The next video is one I found that you could show to your students to help them learn and memorize the colors in Hawaiian.

Our Hawaiian studies teacher used lots of songs to teach our students the Hawaiian language and that is how I have learned too!
I plan to list some resources over the next month to teach more about Hawaii since it is so close to summer and we could all use a little break from our regular curriculum :)
This week is going to be a busy one for us. Friday is our annual May Day event and it is a big deal. Here is my post from last year. May Day 2012
The students have been working hard on their dance and all the songs that they will sing. Here is a sneak peak. Makua (Our Hawaiian studies teacher) has a beautiful voice and is a talented musician. She taught me how to play the ukulele and we are so lucky to have her teaching the students.
It's hard learning a song all in Hawaiian, but I know it will be wonderful.
We have to get costumes finished and fine tune all of our dance steps. I am learning a new hula myself to dance with the teachers. Wish me luck!
